This thesis investigates loanwords in Tanan Rukai, analyzing their phonological and semantic borrowing patterns by different donor languages.
Tanan Rukai has experienced extensive linguistic interaction with various languages, including Puyuma, Saaroa, Kanakanavu, Paiwan, Tsou, Japanese, and Southern Min. This has resulted in multiple layers of lexical borrowings and phonological influence.
Among the Formosan languages, Puyuma has played a significant role in influencing Tanan Rukai, contributing at least three layers of loanwords across different historical periods. Additionally, Tanan Rukai has borrowed lexical items from Saaroa, Kanakanavu, Tsou, and Paiwan, likely as a result of early contact rather than recent interactions, as these loanwords are also found in other Rukai dialects.
Beyond Formosan influences, Tanan Rukai has incorporated numerous loanwords from non-Austronesian languages. Borrowings from Japanese and Southern Min primarily involve recent innovations and modern concepts, stemming from recent interactions. In more recent times, Mandarin has begun influencing Tanan Rukai, though its impact remains too recent for a comprehensive phonological analysis.
Finally, a statistical analysis of 1,128 Tanan Rukai lexical items based on the Loanword Typology meaning list identifies Japanese as the strongest donor language, followed by Puyuma and Southern Min. The semantic fields with the highest proportion of loanwords are (1) Modern World (70.3%), (2) Law (47.1%), and (3) The House (29.3%). In contrast, the least affected semantic fields include (1) Miscellaneous Function Words (0%), (2) Emotions and Values (0%), and (3) Kinship (1.2%).
