This study aims to explore the decision-making behaviors and interaction patterns of gay men in choosing social spaces in the Taipei urban area after the legalization of same-sex marriage.Historically, gay men in Taiwan have faced systemic marginalization and stigmatization, ranging from the association with HIV/AIDS to the discrimination against same-sex families. Society has long regarded them as “deviant others,” limiting their social interactions to hidden or risky spaces. Since the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2019, public acceptance of gender diversity in Taiwan has gradually increased. As the place where same-sex marriage was announced and a long-standing hub for LGBTQ+ rights movements, the Taipei metropolitan area has become a key site for observing changes in spatial choices among gay men. This research adopts a qualitative framework with an interpretive approach as its methodological stance, emphasizing the understanding of participants’ subjective experiences without imposing predefined theories or value judgments. Through in-depth interviews, the study gathers first-hand narratives to explore the contextual meanings and feelings behind space selection and interaction behaviors among gay men. From psychological, social, economic, and environmental perspectives, it analyzes the multifaceted factors that influence these decisions. The findings identify five common types of social spaces used by gay men, each reflecting distinct decision-making logic and interaction characteristics. “Leisure spaces” emphasize environmental openness and psychological relaxation; “gender-friendly dining spaces” highlight inclusive social atmospheres and emotional comfort; “religious venues” provide spiritual peace and a sense of community; “entertainment spaces” focus on themed economic activities and emotional stimulation; and “sports venues” emphasize self-expression and ambiguous interactions. The study also reveals that after same-sex marriage legalization, interaction behaviors have shifted—nonverbal behaviors, once restrained (e.g., avoiding eye contact), have become more open (e.g., sustained eye contact), and verbal communication has moved from ambiguous to more direct and proactive expressions. These changes reflect a broader response to the evolving social climate.
