This study examines the impact of the United States-China trade war on Vietnam’s textile and apparel exports to the US. The analysis is set against the backdrop of Vietnam’s long-standing textile industry, which plays a vital role in the country’s economic development. This thesis elucidates the evolution of Vietnam’s export structure following the Trade War, assessing its impact on the changing structure of Vietnamese industry. The study applies regression analysis, finding that the tariffs significantly impacted Vietnam’s textile and apparel exports, with evidence of lagged trade diversion effects. The export value of Vietnamese products, parallel to Chinese counterparts subject to US 301 tariffs, increased significantly more than others. The study also compares Vietnam’s export structure with Bangladesh and Cambodia, finding less important trade diversion effects due to their respective scopes of production and levels of productivity. Applying the Export Similarity Index (ESI), the study finds Vietnam’s export structure since 2020 closely resembles China’s pre-Trade War export profile – underscoring Vietnam’s role as a substitute for China in the global textile supply chain.
