Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the composite and individual scores of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) in taekwondo athletes, and to analyze their relationships with balance ability and lower-limb explosive power. Methods: A total of 36 taekwondo athletes aged 10 to 17 years (25 males and 11 females) participated in this study. Each subject underwent FMS testing, static balance assessment using center of pressure (COP) measures, and lower-limb explosive power tests including squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ). Relevant data were collected for statistical analysis. Pearson correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships among variables, with the significance level set at α = .05. Results: The average total FMS score among all athletes was 15.89 ± 1.76, and 66.66% (24 athletes) exhibited at least one asymmetrical movement pattern. No significant correlations were found between total FMS scores or individual item scores and static balance ability (p > .05). Regarding explosive power performance, a significant negative correlation was found between the FMS deep squat score and the concentric rate of force development (RFD) during the squat jump (p < .05). The rotary stability score was significantly positively correlated with SJ height, CMJ height, and the modified reactive strength index (RSI) (p < .05), and negatively correlated with SJ concentric RFD (p < .05). In addition, the total FMS score also showed a significant negative correlation with SJ concentric RFD (p < .05). Conclusion: Although most taekwondo athletes had total FMS scores above the risk threshold of 14 points, a high proportion exhibited movement asymmetries, particularly with lower scores in rotary stability and trunk stability push-up, indicating deficiencies in motor control and core stability. These issues may potentially increase the risk of sports-related injuries and warrant further attention in training and screening.
