This study adopts a positive psychology perspective, integrating Seligman's (2011) PERMA model to explore the psychological processes and well-being strategies within seven classical Chinese exile literature texts. The selected works include Yu Fu, Record of the Western Hills Excursion, The Song of the Lute, The Pavilion of Drunken Old Man, Yueyang Tower, Former Ode on the Red Cliffs, and The Pavilion of Joy in Huangzhou. Employing Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis method, the study identifies how historical literati responded to political exile through emotional transformation, psychological adjustment, and the construction of meaning.

Findings reveal a common trajectory across the texts—from sorrow and frustration to transcendence and serenity—demonstrating key aspects of post-traumatic growth and resilience. Each text reflects the five PERMA dimensions: expression of positive emotions, flow experiences through immersion in nature and writing, restoration of interpersonal connections, pursuit of meaningful values beyond the self, and personal accomplishment through literary creation. Beyond enriching the psychological interpretation of exile literature, this research also proposes pedagogical strategies for integrating classical literature into positive psychology-based life education, particularly in vocational high school curricula. Lastly, the study calls for further development in indigenous cultural psychology and a cross-cultural understanding of meaning and well-being.
