This study aims to explore and understand the experiences of gay men using dating apps in their emerging adulthood and how they present themselves on these apps. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three emerging adult gay men, and narrative analysis was used to analyze the data. The study sought to uncover the context and process of dating app use, the establishment and evolution of interaction patterns, and the dynamic development of self-presentation among gay men in their emerging adulthood. The main findings of this study are as follows:
1. Each of the three participants had distinct experiences with dating apps. Fang Kuai Su’s experiences included "secretly using dating platforms to make friends, striking balance between family relationships and personal social needs," "freely and thoughtfully explore various dating apps to create a dating experience that suits himself," and "negotiating app use to adapt to non-traditional intimate relationships, leading to changes in usage motivations and attitudes toward dating" ; CH’s included "limited opportunities for gay socialization preventing self-disclosure," "initially using dating apps to seek intimate relationships and gradually revealing his true self," and "how the nature of his intimate relationships influenced app usage, prompting changes in self-presentation to express clear preferences"; Huan Wen’s included "facing interpersonal setbacks that delayed his willingness to use dating apps," "starting to use dating apps driven by a desire for intimate relationships, presenting himself to deepen relational development," and "adjusting app use and revising profile content as his life priorities shifted."
2. Throughout the process of using dating apps, participants experienced three stages, including "aspiring to meet gay friends but facing external environmental barriers", "dating apps providing a safe, discreet, and convenient platform for socialization, fulfilling both relational and sexual needs" and "life transitions and changes in developmental stages prompting adjustments to app usage."
3. In terms of their dynamic development of self-presentation, participants experienced three stages, including "shaping initial self-presentation styles during early app use ", "gradually forming customized self-presentation with prolonged app usage" and "redefining self-presentation due to shifts in usage goals."
