Journaling is widely recognized for its numerous benefits to both mental and physical health, including improvedemotional regulation, reduced stress, and enhanced self-reflection. However, the fast-paced nature of modern life often leaves individuals with little time or motivation to engage in regular journaling. Furthermore, many people find it challenging to maintain this habit due to a perceived lack of writing skills. More importantly, words alone can sometimes inadequately capture and convey emotions, making it difficult for individuals to fully express their feelings through traditional journaling.
To address these challenges, this study introduces an innovative "Music Diary" system designed to alleviate the burden of writing while enhancing users' emotional awareness and expression. The Music Diary system integrates a conversational journaling approach with generative emotional music, harnessing the profound emotional resonance of music to assistusers in more accurately expressing and understanding their emotions. Through the built-in OpenAI assistant, users can effortlessly record daily events and feelings in a conversational format, while the generative music feature producesemotion-matching compositions based on the diary content, further enriching the emotional depth of the journal entries.
Experimental results indicate that the Music Diary system effectively lowers the barriers to writing, enabling users to engage in journaling even amidst busy schedules. More importantly, the system enhances users' awareness of daily events and emotions, allowing them to document and review their lives in a more positive manner while reducing the discomfort often associated with recording negative experiences. This innovative journaling approach not only offers a unique creative experience but also provides a novel pathway for emotional expression, understanding, and release, making journaling a more appealing and beneficial self-care practice.
The contribution of this study lies in the integration of music with journaling through innovative technology and design. This research explores a novel approach to emotional management and self-expression, offering valuable insights for the future development of journaling applications.
