許多家庭研究認為，傳統家務勞動的分工不均、性別隔離模式，已隨社會變遷產生改變。因為晚期現代性中，社會行動者可以主張自我生活風格，追求親密關係、實踐平等主義與選擇性的親屬關係是其中三個主要特徵。並藉此弭平社會關係中的文化與結構性不平等。新型態的男女同志多元家庭，往往被樂觀地以『去性別』的想像，被認定為是去除這種不平等的主要代表。
本文從社會學與人類學的角度討論上述說法，藉口述訪談資料與田野日誌，說明本地父系親屬脈絡下的男同志家庭分工與家務創造。首先敘明（一）在晚期現代漢人父系社會中，當代台灣社會、漢人父系親屬關係與男同志家庭之間的三個重要扣連：無子化、知而不論、對職業許以高承諾，以及（二）男同志家庭家務分工的學習機制：原生家庭與其他性別化機構。接著描述台灣男同志家庭高度精簡的日常家庭勞務內涵，其中因缺乏性別反思，呈現高度結構性失衡。階級差異、男性氣概、父系血緣格局與父系脈絡是主要原因，產生批判父權，卻未及反思性別位置的困境。顯示在漢人父系中，性別相同的男性同志家庭，仍未脫『做性別』(doing gender)的難題。亦無法以日常家庭勞務照顧來建立新家庭的實體感。
然而，本地男同志家庭實體感何在？本文以十二個台灣男同志單偶家庭的家庭勞務經驗，說明本地男同志家庭在漢人父系社會中如何建立家庭認同，並與異性戀社會共處、共謀。其方法係依靠『做關係』的親友工作(kin work)達到平衡，並產生非血緣的『做親屬』轉變。而男同志家庭的實體，循此在親友工作上創造出家庭的合作與共治、共享的空間，其中強調以情緒(emotion)編織各種親屬關係的重要。一方面稍緩解家庭日常勞務的分工矛盾，另一方面建立男同志家庭的『日常生活』實踐。不過，其中展現的自我與家庭認同，雖鬆動父系親屬關係，但情感、責任上均不拋棄異性戀父系社會關係，展現點滴募化善緣的特有韌性。故此種自我家庭認同，並非標舉宣言式認同，亦不採取唯意志論的選擇性親屬關係。
