哺乳類動物視網膜的無長突細胞參與關於對比、動態與顏色的視覺訊號自雙極細胞到神經節細胞的訊號轉換過程。果蠅的紫外光視覺透過感光細胞R7與R8將訊息傳至髓質第六層後,其訊號下游與處理方式尚未明朗。我們利用R7神經末端重建果蠅髓質第六層的立體模型與視網膜拓譜地圖,分析果蠅髓質第六層特定區域神經的空間分佈關係。藉由軸突與樹突的分佈情形,髓質第六層特定區域神經可以分為方向性與非方向性兩大類,並且各自傳遞不同種類的神經傳導物質:方向性區域神經構成將調節訊號從髓質第六層前方傳至後方的單向線路;而非方向性區域神經則構成互相重疊的區塊,以抑制性訊號涵蓋整個髓質第六層視網膜拓譜地圖。這些發現證明了果蠅髓質第六層的區域神經類似哺乳類的視網膜內網層,利用無長突細胞構成重疊功能網絡來處理通過的視覺訊號。
