本論文主要研究台灣高中甲組射箭運動隊的訓練生活，探討射箭運動員接受訓練的原因。本研究認為，經濟動機並非影響高中甲組射箭運動員長期參與一貫化培訓的主要原因，文化因素扮演更重要的角色。
首先，運動績優升學制度利用國人升學主義之文化特質，激勵國、高中學生投身射箭運動訓練。此一制度設計使高中甲組射箭隊教練得以吸收國中部的優秀運動員進入高中甲組射箭隊，並且強制執行嚴格的訓練規定和生活要求，讓青少年運動員在高度控管的訓練空間中日益精進，達到國家一貫化培訓的政策目標。
在運動績優升學的政策架構下，運動參與者認為參與甲組運動訓練可以獲得更好的教育機會，因此加入射箭隊以透過運動獨立招生管道進入高中、大學。在政策的誘因之外，運動競賽中追求勝利獲得的成就感和刺激感，訓練過程提供的社交性、校隊象徵的榮譽身份、追尋國手資格的夢想和過程，都是吸引青少年拋開乏味的讀書生活，走向甲組專業運動訓練的原因。
不過，高中甲組射箭訓練生活相當嚴苛，教練採取專業化的方式訓練。每天訓練有嚴格的時間表，規定何時進行團體操練，何時測分比賽，何時休息。生活有生活規範，飲食、睡眠、社交都受到限制。一進入甲組射箭隊，隊員必須立即的服從與融入團體，個人自主的空間較少。高中甲組射箭隊像是一個類全控機構（quasi-total institution），隊員身處其中日常活動由明確且正式規範強制施行，這些規範、規定、規則構成單一理性計畫，以支持機構目標的實踐。
在高中甲組射箭隊中，教練有極高的權威。教練經常透過執行體罰和獎勵，向隊員傳遞榮譽、團結、紀律、服從的運動價值。隊員在訓練實踐中，也逐漸認同運動場域的行為準則，進而要求自身和團體中的他人在行為上合於運動價值。在運動團體的社會化影響下，高中甲組射箭運動員習慣於每天受訓的生活互動模式，並且持續再生產團體互動模式和運動價值。
但是，研究也發現，運動主體並不是全盤接受主流運動價值。運動隊是一個動態的文化團體，青少年在團體中彼此互動、溝通，有時也會形成有別於主流運動價值之文化元素，對既有的運動訓練體制進行反抗。
