The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between physical activity amounts, physical activity types and static balance of the elderly, and to examine the static balance among five age groups in the elderly (65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85+ years). Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) was used to assess the physical activity amounts and types, and the static balance indicated the path length and the body sway area of center of pressure were measured by five static balance tests with the static force platform, including the one-leg standing with eyes open, two-leg standing with feet apart and together, two-leg stance positions were with eyes open and closed. Thirty-seven subjects who completed all measurements were, aged 74.59±5.40 years, height 155.48±6.90 cm, and weight 60.38±7.40 kg. Results showed: a) Static balance showed non significant differences among different levels of physical activity amounts. b) Static balance showed non significant correlations with various physical activity types. c) Two-leg standing with feet apart were significant different in both between- and within-subjects among the different age groups. d) Static balance performed with eyes open was significantly better than the eyes closed. It’s conclusion that physical activity amounts are low and the primary physical activity types are sedentary-orientated and walking for the older people. Hence, the physical activity of the elderly might be too light to affect the static balance. But the study findings inferred that the important of vision in the static balance of the elderly. Further investigations on the factors influenced balance of the elderly are required to improve the balance of the elderly, and to serve as references in exercise prescriptions for the elderly.
