This essay introduces the topic of political correctness in digital games, focusing on the game "Concord™" as a case study to explore the consequences of over-implementing political correctness. The motivation for this research stems from the author's 30-year experience as a gamer and technology industry-related engineer, and the curiosity triggered by the backlash against political correctness in the gaming industry. The essay reviews the history of political correctness in media and its shift to digital games, including examples such as Sweet Baby Inc and DEIDetected to illustrate the evolution of political correctness in gaming. It employs a multi-faceted methodological approach combining qualitative content analysis and case study examination to understand the implementation and impact of political correctness in games. Furthermore, the essay investigates why DEI was brought into the digital gaming industry and why it faced backlash. The essay examines examples of politically correct changes in games and controversies, such as the backlash against "Assassin’s Creed: Shadows" for its portrayal of a black Samurai in feudal Japan. It analyzes the misrepresentation of inclusivity, market and player disconnect, journalistic reviews over player feedback, toxic positivity, and the impact of these factors on the game's failure. The essay also highlights the positive impact of inclusive design choices in games like "Overwatch" and "The Sims".
