What is an Old Chinese syllable structure and whether the syllable in Old Chinese has internal structure are settled questions in Chinese linguistics. It appears to be the consensus among researchers that the syllable as a unit consists of at least four segments: the initial, the medial glide, the vowel, and the final segment, plus tone. What is the hierarchy between these segments is still not clear. In this paper the author examines hierarchical structure of syllable in Old Chinese and particularly – the status of a medial glide in it. What makes this paper different from other research on this topic, is that all the data examined in this paper is taken from Wang Li’s “Dictionary of cognate words” (“Tongyuan zidian”) – a dictionary in which a linguist Wang Li collected a great number of so-called cognate words. Cognate words can give us important information about the syllable structure in Old Chinese because of the phonological connection between them: the pronunciation of cognate words is close, but not the same, and the difference between them is not a result of a random process. This difference subjects to certain rules, moreover, is directly related to the structure of the syllable. A slight change in the pronunciation of cognate words might be a result of a partial reduplication – it is a process that targets sub-syllabic constituents, therefore we are able to look into the internal structure of the syllable in Old Chinese. The phenomenon of partial reduplication was used by a linguist Bao Zhiming to reveal the inner structure of the syllable in modern Mandarin, various dialects of Chinese, and Classic Chinese. In this paper I am applying Bao Zhiming’s method of analyzing the syllable to cognate words from the “Dictionary of cognate words” to explore the place of medial glide in the hierarchical structure of the syllable. The medial glide appears to have very different behavior throughout cognate words. The author identifies 5 types of glide behavior in cognate words from the dictionary.
