李普頓認為，我們在日常生活與科學研究中實際所為的歸納推論（inductive practice，後文稱歸納實作）可以分別出兩個不同的問題面向加以探討：一為證成，另一為描述。就證成的問題而言，最重要而突出的一點是，無論是哪一種可能的推論模式都無法克服休謨（Hume）對於歸納的懷疑論證（卽：歸納的證成因循環而無效）。但就描述的問題而言，我們究竟是用什麼方式來從事推論工作，卻不是每一種推論模式都能適切的加以說明的。事實上，已經被哲學家提出並討論的幾種推論模式中，都各自存在著一些無法說明甚至違反歸納實作的缺失。李普頓欲論證：最佳解釋推論（inference to the best explanation，簡稱IBE）是用以部分描述歸納實作的最適切模式。
以IBE來描述歸納實作，蘊含了為IBE提出理據的企圖：若此項描述的論證是成功的，那麼，歸納實作被預設的高度可靠性就理所當然的歸屬於IBE了。
為了闡明歸納實作的實際運作機制，李普頓構作了一個對比的因果解釋模式（contrastive explanation），以此來指引推論。藉著一則科學史的案例研究，他詳細論述科學家如何以該解釋模式來指引推論，最終找出現象的原因。於此同時，李普頓也批評了著名的H-D法和貝氏定理，指出前者在說明一項假說如何被驗證時會產生過於嚴苛或過於寬鬆的弊病，致使其無能描述歸納實作；而具有規範效力的貝氏定理，其實際的運作機制是依賴於解釋的考量的。
在李普頓所刻劃的IBE中，有一項重要的概念區分，卽是將「可愛（lovely）的解釋」（提供較多理解的解釋）區別於「高度可能（likely）的解釋」，而我們是以解釋的可愛度來判斷解釋為真的可能性的。這項稱為「指引說」的論題是李普頓關於IBE的核心主張，也是反對IBE的論者攻擊的焦點之一。「可愛」真的是「高度可能」的指引嗎？解釋之可愛與否的判斷是否是因人而異的？就算解釋之可愛與否的判斷是客觀的，我們有理由相信最可愛的解釋就是最可能為真的解釋嗎？另外，我們有理由相信真的理論就在候選理論當中，因而IBE的推論是可靠的嗎？以IBE來推論不可觀察的事物及其運作機制是否比推論可觀察的事物與運作過程更不可靠？
筆者在本論文中將對李普頓上述的幾項論題與論證加以分析評估。主要的結論是李普頓的描述論證是成功的；但是他為IBE證成的努力則因為消極的論證策略無法積極化解諸項攻擊中的質疑，以及積極論證中出現的缺失而不具說服力，所以僅能就IBE的描述性合法地位提供支持。
