The purpose of this study is to develop The Life Event Scale (LES), a tool that vividly depicts the life experience of the college students in Taiwan and that can be used to assess their mental health with an attempt to help these students to adapt to the ever-changing environment and overcome all sorts of challenges in their daily life.
The study is purposive and convenience sampling. The study samples are comprised of three parts: (1) 22 participants for open-ended questionnaire to develop items of the life events scale; (2) tryout samples (n=389); (3) formal samples (n=1026) and re-test samples (n=63) after two weeks. The data collected are analyzed by SPSS12.0, through descriptive statistics, item analysis, and Pearson product-moment correlation analysis. The primary results from this research are listed as follows.

    1. The LES consists of 62 items, including five subscales: independent-negative-major, dependent-positive-major, dependent-positive-minor/daily, dependent-negative-major, and dependent-negative-minor/daily.
    2. The Cronbach’s α coefficients of the LES subscales ranges from.696 to .823 and .918 for the whole scale; the test-retest reliability coefficients over a 2-week period falls between 664 and 802. In summary, these coefficients of the LES indicate the strong reliability.
    3. The criterion-related validity seems to be solid with the estimates of subjective well-being, and depressive emotion being criterions.

Finally, the test results of this research will be further discussed and studied in-depth to provide research guidance and the application to the educators in the future.
