Depression is a mental illness that afflicts hundreds of millions of people today, affecting individual functioning and social development. This study attempts to explore the relationship between self-compassion and shame and whether self-compassion can be used to prevent depression and regulate shame. This study consists of two studies: Study one follows the questionnaire method and study two is an experimental intervention. The aim is to test :(1) Whether self-compassion acts as a mediator between internal shame and external shame and depression; (2) Through practicing self-compassion writing, can individuals reduce the depression affected by shame and improve self-compassion? After multiple regression and Sobel statistical verification, the results show that: (1) Self-compassion is a mediator between internal and external shame and depression; (2) In study 2, the manipulation of self-compassion is ineffective. Based on the analysis of existing data, the conclusion that self-compassion is a mediator can still be obtained. It is known that increased self-compassion may help individuals prevent the increased risk of depression caused by shame. This paper will also discuss the results of the study, and further put forward relevant suggestions for future research on the intervention of self-compassionate writing for research reference.
