This study aims to explore the relationship between participation in massively multiplayer online games (MOBA, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) and mental health variables (mobile game addiction, emotion regulation, sleep quality and depression symptoms). This study adopted a case-control design and conducted a purposive sampling of 466 Taiwanese adults. According to their participation in MOBA games, they were divided into a user group (frequently participated in the past year) and an ex-user group (had participated in the past but had not played for more than a year). and never used the group (not participating at all). Measurement tools include the Chinese version of the "Mobile Game Addiction Scale", "Emotion Regulation Scale", "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index" and "Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale". Data analysis methods include descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variation (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis. The research results show that the mobile game addiction level of the user group is significantly higher than that of the non-user group (p<.001), and the cognitive re-evaluation ability is significantly lower than that of the former user group (p=.023), but there is no significant correlation with expression of depression. (p=.72). There was no significant difference between MOBA game participation and sleep quality (p=.31), but chi-square analysis pointed out that people with low sleep quality were more likely to be addicted to mobile games (χ²=22.78, p<.001). In addition, there is no significant correlation between MOBA game participation and depression (p=.40). Correlation analysis results show that mobile game addiction is associated with depression (r=.32, p<.001), sleep quality (r=.31, p<.001) and expression suppression (r=.14, p<.001) There was a positive correlation and a negative correlation with group (r=-.25, p<.001).
This study found the diverse impacts of different MOBA game participation modes on mental health, pointing out that continued participants may face a higher risk of mobile game addiction and decreased sleep quality. Recommendations include reducing gaming time for persistent participants and scheduling appropriate gaming sessions, as well as providing educational prevention for non-participants. In the future, longitudinal design and expanded research group scope can be used to further explore the causal relationship between gaming behavior and mental health, so as to provide evidence base and intervention strategies for psychotherapy.
