本論文從社會結構與行動者的角度，重新探討福建省惠安縣東部地區「不落夫家」的婚俗。「不落夫家」意指惠東地區的婦女，婚後習慣上仍住在娘家，逢年過節才去夫家，這種住娘家的狀況直到第一胎出生後才結束，隨著孩子出生，已婚婦女方才正式住進夫家。
本文的田野地為惠東當地的一個漁村，探討環境、歷史、經濟、性別分工的種種外在條件，怎麼構成當地婚姻、村落，家庭與個人的價值觀，並創造出女人的社會空間，給予女人婚後不去娘家的正當性條件。同時，這樣的價值觀滲透進「人」細微的行動之中，成為「自然而然」的態度，並影響了村落性別行動空間的基本藍圖。
我在本篇論文中試圖討論惠東地區的「不落夫家」婚俗，是一個社會擺盪的產物。在惠東這樣一個看似父系繼承的中國南方社會，「父系世系」仍佔有相當的重要性，包括祭祀法則、財產繼承、姓氏、宗族組織、性別評價；然而惠東地區的日常生活中，勞動團體、女性結群、祭祀習慣種種活動，卻一再創造女人自身的社會空間，強調女人與原家、與社區、與女人群體的緊密關係，相對的則壓抑、排拒「夫妻」關係。並且從當地「人」與「世系」、「家」的三個範疇裡，我們可以觀察到霞西社會的婚姻，事實上擺盪於「聯姻核心」與「世系法則」之間。
就此，本文試圖推論「不落夫家」是一個「文化內在矛盾」的產物，外顯為人的具體感受，和社會價值，形成女人在「去，或者不去夫家」之間的慾望拉鋸。這個慾望的拉鋸具體落實在社會生活裡，成為一段「什麼也不是」的模糊空間，既不再從屬於娘家，也非完全轉移到夫家。有趣的是，這段時間的長短卻取決於每個女人婚姻的實際狀況，可以很長，也可能很短，長者可達十年以上，短者可在兩年以內，「不落夫家」本身實是一套行動者運作的策略。
