With the rapid technological advancements in chatbots, both new teaching strategies and concerns have emerged in the educational field. Concurrently, the importance of critical thinking for university students has escalated. This study aims to explore the role of chatbots integrated with questioning strategies in fostering critical thinking intentions among university students, using the human trafficking incident in Cambodia from 2021 to 2022 as a case study. The study involved 40 participants from National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, including both undergraduate and graduate students.
Research tools incorporated news articles related to Cambodian human trafficking and employed the PIRLs reading comprehension questioning methods and Golden Circle theory. Google App Script was used as the backend compiler, linked to Google Sheets as a micro-database, and a "Wen Ba, Wen Bot!" chatbot was created on the Line platform as a blended learning material. A pre-experimental research design was utilized, employing the Instructional Materials Motivational Survey and a College Students' Critical Thinking Intentions scale for quantitative data collection, along with semi-structured interviews for qualitative insights.
The main findings reveal that this study successfully utilized multimodal conversational interfaces, integrated with PIRLs reading comprehension questioning methods and Golden Circle theory, to create a "Wen Ba, Wen Bot!" chatbot focused on the Cambodian human trafficking issue. The study offers a prototype design for digital learning materials aimed at fostering critical thinking, serving as a basis for iterative user experience enhancements in subsequent research. The chatbot positively impacted university students' learning motivation, as indicated by assessments conforming to the ARCS Motivation Model. When using the material, students tended to opt for higher-level or open-ended questioning strategies, aiming for a deeper understanding of the content. Lastly, the analysis suggests that prior knowledge and level of education might influence students' critical thinking intentions.
