本文來自於作者在2006年下半年，於廣東省一家台資勞動密集工廠進行的參與實作。藉由這個個案研究，我們可以探討當代中國外資企業之中，勞動過程與勞雇關係的形貌。首先，在勞動過程方面，在這家工廠裡，作者觀察到了工人自願趕工的現象，使得這家工廠成為一個饒富意味的案例——過去的勞動過程研究，往往將中國外資企業的工廠體制定位為以強制為基礎的專制體制；為什麼在一個位於中國的外資勞力密集製造業，竟然會出現一種深富霸權性格的工廠體制？針對這樣的問題，本研究的答案指向以下的方向：該公司以一種表面上是計時、實際上卻更為複雜的薪資制度、以及門禁等制度安排為基礎，形塑了營造志願性順服的趕工遊戲；其次，在勞雇關係方面，本研究則討論了在珠三角的脈絡之下，公司如何地身兼多種不同的角色，以至於勞雇關係在此具有各種不同的面向。而透過這些不同的面向，我們可以一窺當代中國資本與工人之間支配、共識或反抗的各種可能。最後，勞動過程與勞雇關係的形貌，也與珠江三角洲製造業工廠之中，車間、宿舍共生的居住型態密切相關，同時也鑲嵌於中國承襲自改革開放前的戶籍制度之中。本研究試圖建立起這樣的聯繫，以探討資本主義在中國發展的特殊性。
