The influence of family on individuals is profound and enduring. Although education is often seen as a powerful means to break the cycle of social reproduction, this influence can persist even among students at elite universities (such as NTHU), shaping their aspirations for further education or entrepreneurial ventures.
This study explores the family backgrounds of students at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and analyzes the impact of their Socioeconomic Status (SES) index and family financial situation on their learning experiences and future development. We utilized data from the NTHU Center for Institutional Research collected between 2016 and 2019, setting up seven regression models to examine the factors influencing NTHU students' decisions to pursue higher education or entrepreneurship. Additionally, we analyzed how family background affects other decisions, such as working high hours in part-time jobs or participating in school clubs during their studies, and how these decisions impact their academic performance and career planning.
Our findings indicate that the SES index significantly influences students' choices regarding club participation and part-time work during their studies, but has no significant impact on their entrepreneurial aspirations or willingness to pursue further education. Therefore, schools and government educational authorities should enhance counseling and support activities for students from low-income families, optimize resource allocation, and implement reasonable scholarship and entrepreneurship subsidy programs to promote fairness in education and career development. Students themselves should also engage in proactive learning and conscious actions to change their learning experiences and create more possibilities for their career planning.
