虛擬與現實的概念一樣都是自人類開始就存在於每個人的認知中,虛擬這一概念並不是隨電腦等技術革新而催生的產物,真實空間與虛擬空間共同塑造了我們生存的環境。技術的進步使虛擬從存在於腦海中的抽象思緒變成了更加具體可感知可獲取的狀態,也為人類提供了多種探索虛擬空間的方式,但同時也讓人類陷入新的沉迷於虛擬媒介的困境。這些現狀激發我利用VR和AR技術透過實驗性創作對虛實空間進行探索。經過多次創作後,本人意識到虛擬與真實之間是可以非互斥的關係共同存在的。
本論文著重於我創作歷程中三件作品的創作概念與執行方法討論,分別從不同的角度展現某種虛擬與真實的非互斥存在形式。第一件作品〈Thalassophobia-BR15〉利用AR這一媒介使虛擬與真實在視覺上疊合從而引發對環境的存在質疑,讓虛擬與真實空間達到非互斥存在的狀態。第二件作品〈The Entry〉透過在VR虛擬空間中建造虛擬的鏡子並為體驗者製作虛擬的身體,激發體驗者同時感受自我真實肉體與虛擬身體共同存在的衝突與和解,來證明虛擬與真實的非互斥存在關係。第三件作品〈深海孤絕中的出離〉透過VR中建造一個昏暗沉靜的深海空間,讓體驗者獨自在深海的孤絕狀態中感受碰撞和壓迫帶來的迷失,達到猶如真實世界的解離狀態,並慢慢在虛擬世界穿梭的同時找出平靜與自由,從而嘗試達到出離的狀態,體驗者從感悟中體會深海與真實世界的非互斥共存。
在虛擬媒介已經深入人類生活每個角落的當下,人類與虛擬的連結只會在未來越來越緊密,未來需要更多VR/AR技術相關的軟硬體技術知識來創造更好的體驗感受,更進一步地探索虛擬和真實的非互斥關係,找出人類在虛實空間之間的平衡。
Humans have always known what is virtual and what is real and have been living in a world shaped by both virtual space and real space. Thus, the concept of virtual does not come from innovative technologies. The advancement of technology has indeed brought the concept of virtual from one’s cognition to a more concrete, perceptible, and accessible state. It provides humans with a variety of ways to explore virtual space but also makes humans fall into a new predicament of being addicted to virtual media at the same time. These current situations inspired me to use VR and AR technology to explore virtual and real spaces through experimental creations. After many creations, I realized that the virtual and the real co-exist in a non-exclusive relationship.
This thesis focuses on the discussion of the concept and creation method of the three works in my creation process, showing the non-exclusive existence forms of virtual and real from different angles. The first work “Thalassophobia-BR15” used the medium of AR to make the visual superposition of virtual and real in an intuitive way, by questioning the existence of the environment, virtual and real spaces can reach a state of non-exclusive existence. The second work “The Entry” built a virtual mirror in the VR virtual space and provides a virtual body for the experiencer, inspiring the experiencer to feel and explore the conflict and reconciliation of the coexistence of the real body and the virtual body, to prove the non-exclusive relationship of existence between the virtual and real. The third work “Nonattachment in the Isolation of the Deep Sea” built a dark deep-sea space in VR, allowing the experiencer to collide, oppress and get lost in the isolated state of the deep sea, to achieve a state of dissociation from reality, find the peace and freedom by exploring the virtual world, then finally, reach the state of nonattachment. The virtual deep-sea space and the real world coexist in the experiencer’s constantly changing perception during the experience.
Our dependency on virtual media nowadays will only make the connection between human beings and the virtual become closer in the future. More VR/AR technology-related knowledge will be needed to better experience and explore the non-exclusive relationship between virtual and real to achieve the balance between virtual and real space.
