摘要

國民的民族想像對於國家共同體形成有極大的作用。因此，國家的統治者莫不致力於對國家發展至今的民族歷史、民族疆界以及民族精神性概念加以整理，以便打造特定的民族認同，凝聚國民對國家的向心力與認同感。在這個過程中，於學校這一個有組織、有計畫的教育場所使用的教科書，無疑是最方便的工具之一。
本論文擬經由「民族歷史的敘述」、「建構民族疆域」、「愛國心與民族精神的培養」三個面向，分析教科書如何作為國家建構民族的敘述工具。
本文的分析對象是1968年-1989年由國立編譯館統一編纂的國小教科書。經由對教科書的內容分析，本論文發現，教科書透過一套環繞著「黃帝神話」、「民族英雄系譜」以及「民族記憶」的敘事結構，建構了一個本質性統一且連續的中華民族。再者，教科書藉由繪製與書寫一塊被稱作「疆域」的地理區塊，建構了一個與中華民族過去的歷史以及未來的命運，緊密地聯繫在一起的民族疆域。最後，建立民族精神性概念是國家用以建國與增強認同的必要手段。因此，教科書透過敘述足以激勵國民之愛國心，以及發揚民族精神的故事，建立民族精神性概念。
1980年代末期戒嚴體制正式崩解之前，臺灣在中國民族主義主流意識下，建構了一個揉雜種族、民族、文化與國家等不同概念於一爐的中華民族。也就是說，戰後臺灣所建構的中華民族是一套融合種族民族主義、文化民族主義與國家民族主義三種不同類型的中國民族主義論述，與19世紀末到20世紀初建立中華民族過程中所創造出來的中國民族主義論述未必一致，顯然是為了符應當時的現實利益與政治期望。

The nation-building in Taiwan primary school textbooks after World War II (1968-1989)

Abstract

The national imagination enormously affects the national community. Hence every national ruler devotes to cast national history, national boundary as well as the national psychic concept to build the specific national identification and to cohere the national centripetal force. The textbook picked by organized and programmatic school is undoubted one of the effective tools during people absorption.
The main purpose of this research is analyzing the effectiveness of textbook for national construction through three dimensions: history description, boundary construction, and patriotism and nationalism development.
The analysis objects of this research are primary school textbooks edited by the National Institute for Compilation and Translation from 1968 to 1989. Through the textbooks contents analysis, we can discover that all these textbooks constructed an essential unification and continual Chinese nation by a series of descriptions surrounded by “the Myth of Huang-ti”, “national hero genealogical records” as well as “national memories.” Furthermore, the textbooks constructed boundary, an area built by using the map plotting and the writing narration, connected closely with both the past Chinese history and the future destiny. Finally, the institution of the nation spiritual concept is an essential method for establishing a country and strengthening identification. Thus, these textbooks set up the nation spiritual concept by inspiring patriotism and developing nationalism stories.
Before the martial law system official disintegration in the late 1980s, under Chinese nationalism mainstream consciousness, Taiwan has constructed a melting pot of Chinese nation with different concepts of races, nations, cultures, countries, and etc. In other words, the Chinese nation established after World War II by Taiwan was a set of nationalism elaboration formed by three different philosophies: race nationalism, culture nationalism and country nationalism. Obviously, this amalgamative nationalism was designed to fit in with the realistic benefit and the political expectation at that time, and was not necessarily consistent with the nationalism created during the process of the Chinese nation established from the end of the 19 century to the beginning of the 20th century.
