Agriculture has always been important in Nicaragua in terms of food safety, employment,
economic growth, and international trade. However, despite its importance, Nicaragua
keeps struggling on increase its productivity, improve the quality of products and add links
to the production chain that could improve the profit margins of farmers, in the national
and international market. Even though 90% agriculture is in charge of small farmers with
3 hectares of land or less, the middle and big producers are the ones with access to capital
and credit for their activities, dominating the exports of the country. In the other side,
Taiwan is a younger country that has gradually exploited and exhausted the benefits of
agriculture in each stage of development. Hence, how has Taiwan been able to be such a
    success in agriculture?
This study attempts to extract lessons from the performance of agriculture in Taiwan and
analyzes how these lessons can help the agricultural sector in Nicaragua to resolve its
current issues. This research considers information obtained from official authorities,
experts, journals, statistics, multinational institutions, and others that have work on related
topics in the case of Nicaragua and Taiwan. Additionally, interviews took place to enhance
the discussion around this topic with experts in the area.
