This study aims to find the mechanism linking interpersonal trust, gratitude, and intellectual humility. People with gratitude can reflect on others’ generosity in the past, forge relationships with others, and perceive others’ sincere willingness to cooperate. Moreover, people with intellectual humility are willing to humbly understand other people without prejudice and to accept their differences from oneself as potential advantages for achieving shared goals. Combined these two elements, they can assist people to establish interpersonal trust with others. Therefore, we hypothesized that such intellectual humility moderates and strengthens the effect of gratitude on interpersonal trust. We design a correlational study (Study 1) and an experimental study (Study 2) to test our hypothesis. The results suggest that gratitude and intellectual humility not only positively predict interpersonal trust, but also reinforce each other’s effects on trust. Accordingly, if one wants to promote interpersonal trust in society, not only gratitude can be the target of intervention, intellectual humility can and should be considered alongside. In addition, the current study echoes with the two dimensions of the Stereotype Content Model (Fiske, 2002): warmth and competence. Specifically, we believe that gratitude may promote interpersonal bonding through the perception of others’ generosity and, thus, warmth. At the same time, intellectual humility seems to uphold the interpersonal bonds and fortify one’s belief in other’s ability to achieve shared goals, or shortly, competence. Future research may extend the investigation by using new ways to manipulate and verify the causal relationship between gratitude, intellectual humility, and interpersonal trust as well as the social changes that interpersonal trust may bring about.
