Investigate energy expenditure between a continuous 30 min bout of running compared with 3 consecutive 10 min bouts of running in different intensity. 12 subjects were recruited to complete a maximal exercise (GXT) and four submaximal treadmill trials include two exercise models and two intensity. On separate days (24h between trial) and in counterbalanced order, performed a continuous 30 mins bout of running at ventilation threshold (moderate intensity) and 70%VT(light intensity), respectively. And 3 separate 10 mins bouts of running at moderate and light intensity, respectively. Post-exercise VO2 was continuously monitored until baseline was re-established. Results showed that no differences in average energy expenditure were found between continuous and discontinuous exercise no matter when intensity at moderate or light. But less energy expenditure in discontinuous exercise period at moderate exercise. Anyway through offset by accumulate much energy expenditure in recovery period, discontinuous exercise were achieve the same energy expenditure with continuous exercise.
