隨著老年人口比率逐年上升，老年族群的消費力、影響力都不可小覷，而老年人使用手機的比率也逐漸上升。由於過去研究較少有關於台灣當地老年人使用手機的研究，因此，本研究以台灣北部台北及新竹地區為例，針對65歲以上的老年族群，了解他們使用手機的行為以及使用現況，包含使用動機、頻率、常用功能、使用時遇到的問題。
為了能清楚、直接地得到資訊，本研究採用訪談的方式進行。結果顯示，老年人使用手機最主要的原因是方便連絡。另外，雖然現在手機的功能非常多元，但手機的操作應該盡量符合老年人原有的操作習慣，功能越簡單越好，目前老年人傾向於只使用「通訊」這個傳統的功能。以往所困擾的字體、螢幕大小、按鍵等問題，現在大部分老年人都已經知道可以去換適合自己的手機，也表示現在手機的設計已經改進了這些問題。
