由於漢語沒有對等的關係代名詞，關係子句的漢譯便成為佛典譯者的重大挑戰之一。筆者意圖透過巴利《中部》（Majjhima-Nikāya）與其對應漢譯本的對比，研究漢譯佛典的小句關係化策略乃至其語篇結構。一方面探討昔日佛典譯家如何想方設法將原典的關係結構轉換成文句通順的漢語句式；另一方面考察與之對應的翻譯技巧和從中應運而生的一些語法變異。
鑑於巴利語和漢語兩大語言系統的特性差異，本文分別從三個方向開展論述：一、以類型學理論架構檢視巴利關係化結構，據此描寫巴利關係句的形式與功能；二、梳理巴利語句與對應漢譯的句法層級問題；三、立足於上古漢語語法架構，考述《中部》對應漢譯本關係句的語法現象。
藉由語料舉析與異譯本對比，本研究發現《中部》關係句可大分為關聯式和後置式兩大類。對應漢譯關係結構在形式上以仿譯原語語序為主，並融合運用上古漢語主題句與主題鏈、主題片和排比等句段構造。漢譯本也從既有的漢語語法框架中衍生出與之信息組織相異的小句合成式樣。本論文同時聚焦於關係化與主題化的相互關聯。儘管諸多研究顯示關係化過程在漢語中與主題化表現密切相關，但這僅能說明一部分的漢譯關係句樣式。關鍵因素即在於巴利關係句與上古漢語的信息組織方式同中有異。

Abstract
As there is no relative pronoun in Chinese, paralleling relative clauses in Chinese sentences represents a significant challenge for Chinese translators of Pāli Buddhist texts. The main issues raised in this dissertation are the syntactic relativization strategies and discourse structures of relative clauses in the Majjhima-Nikāya and its Chinese parallels. The aim of this comparative study is twofold: to illustrate how translators rendered relative clauses into Chinese sentences and to investigate translation methods and grammatical variations in Chinese parallels.
Due to the fact that Pāli and Chinese are two dissimilar languages, the present research approach problems from three aspects: (1) A syntactic and semantic description of Pāli relative constructions based on the typological hypothesis; (2) An exposition of the syntactic hierarchy of Pāli sentences and their corresponding Chinese translations; (3) A comparison of the Pāli relative constructions in various Chinese translations according to Old Chinese grammar.
In the light of the analysis of demonstrated examples, the results reveal that relative clauses in the Majjhima-Nikāya involves two major types: correlative and post-head construction. The critical factor affecting the Chinese parallels is syntactical loan, especially in word-order reproduction. Another significant feature is that Chinese translations not only integrate multiple Old Chinese topic structures, but also generate the information structure changes of certain clause-complexes. Many studies show that relativization seems to exhibit a close relation to the process of topicalization in Chinese; however, this can explains only some part of Chinese relative constructions. The key factor is that in spite of some similarities, there exist differences in the information structures between the Pāli texts and Chinese translations.
