原本屬於精英階層的台幹，隓著跨國移動的人數增加，台幹的專業性漸趨大眾化。台幹之間也開始形成階層，台幹的生活也隨著時代的改變，發生轉變，其中低階台幹雖然享有著台幹的光環，但卻與過往人們所認知的台幹生活有著相當大的差距。以往人們認為的台幹包二奶、花天酒地、夜夜笙歌的景像並不再與這群台幹的生活劃上等號。
交際應酬因為薪資與位階的下降而減少。低階台幹日常生活與社交生活，受到居住地影響，而擁有不同的生活方式。但是，相同的是，經濟優勢的下降使他們無法炫富，並承受著回不去的壓力。另一方面，台幹與大陸人的關係維持在表面上的交往，私底下的社交圈卻是將大陸人摒除在外，同時這也在親密關係的擇偶選擇產生影響。被削弱的經濟優勢、不願與地方產生聯結的生活方式，低階台幹透過網路橫跨二岸，形成意義自足的虛擬社群生活。
