「現在，我們中醫師要走出自己的診間，走到會議室來開會了。」這是一個新的局面，中醫不再宣稱自己是「整體觀」的，與西醫「不可共量」，連討論的機會都沒有，也不是完全放棄了自己的主體性「西醫化」。中醫師展開與西醫的對話，這個對話不是陷入文字思辨的邏輯推演，而是落實在一件非常具體、可觸摸、有實體體積的儀器——舌診儀。
這是一件可以統計、量化的儀器，不過量化只是個結果，我將描述過程中經歷的諸多轉變。發展初期中醫師以「相機等於人眼」的比喻與舌診儀的互動，目標是把「影像」拍攝好。後來，反光的瓶頸，使得中醫師轉變成「舌像不等於舌象」的比喻，思考在「相機等於人眼」和「舌像不等於舌象」之間打開一系列操作的可能。考證中醫典籍，進入古代顏料製造的世界，明白「句句都是結論」的文獻記載，將對中醫傳統的想像置入舌診儀設計，開啟新的知識演化。病人的伸舌練習、醫師的身體感訓練、古代身體感的敏感度、氣緣關係的凝聚等等都在這一系列的位移之中。因此舌診儀不只是「工具」，更串接起知識形式的改變和不同價值的追求。
中醫師藉由舌診儀重組新的網絡，保留舌診的「感知」方式，而不只是影像本身，以追求「互為主體」的社群溝通可能。只是受限於儀器，傳統舌診操作將被轉化，以創新的設計具體展現對中醫知識的理解與想像。中醫的身體也從知識生產的來源，轉變成知識研究的對象，誕生更明確的對身體訓練的細節。我的研究不預設分析架構，透過以「描述」為主的方式，將整個過程鋪展開來。
