The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of government subsidies on firms' productivity and markup, distinguishing between continuous subsidies and one-time subsidies. An empirical analysis is conducted using data from the Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ) database for firms in the biotechnology and medical industry from 2012 to 2022.
The econometric model employs a Value-added Translog production function model, using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to estimate firms' productivity. Additionally, De Loecker's estimation method is used to estimate firms' markup.
The empirical results show that subsidies have little impact on the pharmaceutical and health food industry (200) but have a significant negative impact on the medical equipment industry (332). Continuous subsidies affect large firms in both industries, while one-time subsidies only impact small firms.
