In this study, we used behavioral experiment and event-related potentials to see the changes of the brain when Mandarin- Taiwanese bilinguals hear semantics relation /animacy ingredients violate thematic role sentences. All participants were right-handed adults who hear Mandarin and Taiwanese sentences in which the different order of the existential sentences and for the correctness of the statement made key judgments.
Result of the study:
(1) In Mandarin Chinese, non-thematic role violated verbs preceded by unrelated contexts and animate NPs evoked P600 effects.
(2) In Mandarin Chinese, thematically violated verbs preceded by inanimate argument NPs evoked P600 effects.
(3) In Taiwanese, non-thematic role violated verbs preceded by unrelated contexts and animate NPs evoked N400 effects.
(4) In Taiwanese, thematically violated verbs preceded by inanimate argument NPs evoked N400 effects.
