The purposes of this study were to understand the subjective experiences of the college students who had been bullied, how they reacted during that period of time, how they went it through, and how their victimized experiences influenced them along the way. This study interviewed six college students who had the experiences of being bullied, used in-depth interview to collect data, and used phenomenological analysis to summarize and analyze data. The findings were as follows:
The reasons of being bullied included that those victims did not mean to hurt others yet got misunderstood, and the victims got involved in some high-risk activities. The other factors included personal traits, the differences of ascribed status, poor life habit, and misfit of the gender role expectations.
On the emotional side, if the victims were being bullied physically, they usually felt terrified; for those who were suffered from the relationship bully, they usually felt confused or did not know how to respond. During those period of time, most victims felt painful, depressed, or unhappy. Besides, the bullied experiences made victims judged themselves very negatively, felt inferior, and had negative view of others and the world. Nevertheless, the bullied experiences helped them to understand themselves more and learn how to interact with others.
The coping strategies of those victims included being tolerant, or evasive, or persuaded themselves it would be different later on; they expressed the emotions by writing a diary; rationalized everything, changed the factors of being bullied, tried harder to get acknowledgement, left the situation and try to avoid from contacting the tyrant, distracted their attention, as well as sought the social support system. Fortunately, those victims had some positive experiences along the way, which helped them to get through that tough process.
Most of the victims showed that their bullied experiences had impact on their personal traits, also their school life, family relationship, interpersonal relationship and social psychological wellbeing.
The implications and suggestions were addressed.
