基於促進我們瞭解網路的各種特性,網路量測(Network Measurement)是一項極重要的活動。為了進行網路量測,人們發展了所謂的網路量測架構(Network Measurement Infrastructure),其內含多個量測用的量測點,每個量測點則是分散在網路上不同地點的工作站,專門負責對網路的性質進行各種不同的量測。目前已經有許多的分散式量測架構被提出,這些架構都具有一個共通的特性,即皆倚靠少數幾個(例如數十個)分散式的量測節點,去測量大規模的網路。以這樣的架構來量測網路的特性,其量測結果的精確度必然會跟所佈署的量測點個數相關。本篇論文著重於討論目前現有分散式量測架構應用於測量大規模的網路時有哪些不足。
同時基於增加測量的精確度、降低測量時對網路使用造成的衝擊、降低測量節點損壞時所造成系統的退化及提供更好的量測點等因素,提出基於點對點型式的網路量測架構。同時,認為分散式網路量測架構也必須能具備擴充系統功能的能力,尤其是分散式的環境下要重新佈署系統是相當繁瑣及困難的。因此,本篇論文另一個重點便是著重於如何整合行動式代理人和點對點型式網路的技術,並且提出我們實作後的應用程式介面(Application Programming Interface)。
