The research aims to provide experiences of a Christian intern counseling psychologist struggling and coping with the LGBT issues that has arisen during internship. Utilizing a research approach which incorporates the qualitative research, the literature presented here involves semi-structured interviews with three Christian intern counseling psychologists and analyzes the information gained from these interviews via the content analysis method. The results are as follows:
According to the experience of Christian intern counseling psychologists who have faced conflicts involving LGBT issues, the stereotyped perspective is one in which religious values regarding LGBT groups causes Christian intern counseling psychologists to have internal conflicts as to how to handle these issues. These issues are quite diverse as they involve factors such as different standpoints, identities, groups, professions and religions, and the aforementioned conflicts may have an impact upon the religious life, speciality, and self-identity of these counseling psychologists. Due to the manifold complications that arise when dealing with the issue of homosexuality, Christian counseling psychologists are often left in a difficult situation. In addition, the literature shows that when handling LGBT cases, Christian intern counseling psychologists may harbor misgivings regarding the impact of one’s religion on the rights and interests of LGBT clients, the effect that one’s identification as a Christian could possibly have on the welfare of such clients, and the conflict between one’s religious identity and the LGBT culture.
Moreover, Christian intern counseling psychologists have come up with abundant solutions when confronting LGBT-related conflicts, such as self-protecting debates, indirect responses, and leaving religious values aside temporarily. Besides, they also attempt to understand and empathize with LGBT clients more fully and shorten the distance between each other by looking for the similarities they shared with LGBT clients, empathizing with the difficult situations that such clients may encounter via their own experience, making more LBGT friends, and seeking any possible connection between God and the LGBT clients. Furthermore, these psychologists manage to keep their flexibility in dealing with conflicts and react to the surrounded environments and communities with kind words and deeds, and they also remain mentally balanced and safe in conflicts by knowing their own limits.
All in all, the findings of this study offer suggestions for the cultivation of a counseling psychologist, as well as for further research in the future.
