在時代的變遷中，多數的母親背負著多重的角色扮演，而「母職」一直被視為女性的天職，因此，母職身分和女性身分就像是等號一般的存在，現代女性在母職信念之下，如何在傳統與現代間、家庭與工作間、期待與衝突間，尋求一種擺盪中的平衡，對女性來說就是一種考驗。台灣現代散文女作家的書寫傳統，常以女性自身的生活為題材，無論是愛情、婚姻、家庭、親子、人際關係、職場工作，故「親職」主題就成為女作家擅於發揮的內容。而文學系出身的「閨秀」女作家中，廖玉蕙不但繼承此抒情傳統又能有所變革，其散文作品幽默、多情，以其詮釋人生的能力，從尋常事件中思考出人生哲理，去書寫生活中的每個場景，相較於其他女作家的抒情方式，廖玉蕙展現出不同的個人特色。閱讀廖玉蕙的作品就像看一部女性生活史，記錄著一個從鄉下到都市，從多愁的青春少女蛻變成豁達的成熟女性，從教養子女到關懷社會的女性成長歷程，不但傳遞著女性生命經驗的分享，更可看出女性生命成長的軌跡，一個女人的一生可說是呼之欲出。
廖玉蕙具有母親及老師的雙重身分，她是以慈母的心情去教書的，所以看待學生時總是多了一分同理心，相信每個孩子都是值得被等待，這就是廖玉蕙的真性情與用心。廖玉蕙是用筆將親職身分與理念結合，時間在廖玉蕙的書寫中是連貫性的而且是清晰可辨，子女成長的點滴、師生相處的情誼，廖玉蕙用筆捕捉瞬間並成為永恆，寫出一沙一世界的靜觀自得，跳脫閨秀女作家精緻優雅的文風，廖玉蕙以自嘲、幽默的寫作筆法，平實的為讀者描繪出一幅樂觀正向充滿人情味的生活圖像；以個人所感描繪出大時代的多變樣貌，將文學的深度思考帶給群眾；以個人特有風格在文壇獨樹一幟，並寫出女性散文作家創作的新方向及人間最動人真摯的風景。
