With the vigorous development of medical treatment in today’s society, human life is gradually extended and higher quality of life is enjoyed. As for veterinary medicine also has a great breakthrough, it can provide more quality techniques in the medical diagnosis and treatment of pet diseases. In view of people are willing to spend more time and money on pets, it has also greatly increased the importance of veterinary medicine.
Veterinary medicine has made great progress in nuclear medicine. It can diagnose animal diseases and treat them early. However, with radioactive drugs in nuclear medicine may cause radiation safety concerns to staff and owners. Therefore, this study used the MicroShield software program to simulate three kinds of radioactive drugs in clinical practice, with different methods of diagnosis and treatment introduced in international literature, and conservatively estimated and simulated the doses that may be received by the staff of the veterinary hospital. When the pets can be released after the pets finish the diagnosis or treatment, the dose that the owner and family members will receive when they take care of their pets after the release were discussed in this study. In addition, this study also summarizes the international literature reports, and gives suggestions on the time for the animal to be released from the domestic veterinary hospital and the animals’ care and radiation safety after the animal returns home. In view of the fact that there is currently no clear standard for radiation safety in animal nuclear medicine clinics in Taiwan, the results of this study can provide a reference for the relevant radiation protection control of the competent authority in the future.
