This thesis discusses the Russian tsarist penal system through the example of Sakhalin Island from a travel essay prospective, namely Vlas Doroshevich’s Sakhalin: Katorga. At the forefront, we put the problem of peopling the boundless border spaces of Siberia and the Far East, and the feasibility of using hard labor in the development of these strategic territories. For a more in-depth analysis of social and economic relations on the prison island, we have compiled the observations of journalist Doroshevich with the post-modern prison theory of Michel Foucault. This approach allowed us not only to take a fresh look at the failure of the Sakhalin colony, but also understand the essence of penal colonization, and assess its phenomenon from a global perspective.
