The pervasive use of instant messaging system is prominent to reinforce the performance of group problem solving, as it could connect people from different places to do brainstorming altogether, making cross-lingual brainstorming possible. However, the interplay of cultural diversity in a group and the social interaction in brainstorming process raise the problem of cross-lingual communication and the tradeoff between quality and productivity of brainstorming output. In this work, a system prototype, NBrain, was implemented to study how behavioral and social signals influenced cross-lingual brainstorming. NBrain was equipped with features that could transmit work status, provide appropriate feedback or signal social support in comprehension. The usability and the impact of NBrain was evaluated in a field study and a user study in laboratories. The results of user study showed a positive trend of improved performance without enhancing their workload. The versatile usage of giving like influenced the collaborative performance of brainstorming in various ways, and its effect could last until summarization.
