The career development and post-graduation career transition of collegiate athletes have garnered increasing attention in recent years. The dual identity of student and athletes presents unique challenges in their career development process, including academic pressure, athletic performance expectations, and future career planning. Furthermore, globalization and technological advancements have contributed to the boundaryless nature of careers, making workforce entry increasingly complex. This study examines how proactive personality influences proactive career behavior through career adaptability among collegiate athletes in the open division. Grounded in career construction theory, this research highlights the role of proactive personality and career adaptability in shaping proactive career behavior and explores the moderating effect of social support in this process. A total of 183 questionnaires were distributed, with 171 valid responses collected. The study targeted athletes who had participated in first-tier, second-tier, or higher-level competitions organized by Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, internal consistency reliability analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis. The findings and conclusions are presented as follows: (1) Proactive personality positively predicts proactive career behavior among collegiate athletes. (2) Career adaptability mediates the relationship between proactive personality and proactive career behavior, indicating that collegiate athletes with high proactive personality can leverage career adaptability as a psychological resource to actively engage in career-enhancing behaviors and make necessary adjustments to adapt to their environment. (3) Social support does not moderate the relationship between proactive personality and career adaptability, nor does it moderate the mediated relationship in the moderated mediation model. The study's findings not only support the framework of career construction theory but also validate that proactive personality influences proactive career behavior through the mediating effect of career adaptability. This suggests that fostering collegiate athletes' proactivity and psychological resources can better prepare them for career transitions and challenges. Additionally, increasing opportunities for collegiate athletes to engage in career-enhancing activities can enhance their future competitiveness and adaptability.
