This thesis aims to examine the impact of smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel nut chewing on income, psychological needs, and physical health. It provides insights into how these addictive behaviors affect individuals, aiding in the formulation of policies and interventions to promote well-being and public health.
The thesis utilizes the “Comprehensive Group” data of 2020“Taiwan Social Change Basic Survey” 2020, Phase8 Project 1st, and conducts empirical analysis by establishing regression models. In addition to employing binary variables to categorize the three addictive behaviors, the thesis also incorporates interaction terms and analyzes various consumption frequencies to dissect their impacts on the five aforementioned dimensions. The empirical results indicate that smoking has a minimal effect on income but negatively affects psychological needs. Increasing smoking frequency leads to more severe negative consequences of addiction and withdrawal. Conversely, alcohol consumption positively influences income and social relationships, while its effects on life satisfaction, happiness, and health are not significant. Daily betel nut chewing significantly impacts happiness but does not have a significant effect on income, social relationships, life satisfaction, and health.
Based on these findings, the thesis suggests preventive measures and awareness campaigns to raise consciousness. For individuals affected by addiction, it recommends cessation support and psychological counseling. Health promotion activities should provide constructive social support and socializing opportunities to reduce the occurrence of these addictive behaviors.
