Trigger-based animation is the use of objects as triggers to control a series of animations in digital materials. It can help the instructors to present the teaching materials timely and suitably, attract the learners’ attention, and reduce working memory load and cognitive load. Adaptive Pointer is a visual object, by the trigger-based animation, instructors can control the presentation adaptively, causing Adaptive Pointer to be attracted automatically in preattentive processing, guiding students’ attention adaptively in order to make them notice the essential messages and to promote the learning effects.
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of the “Adaptive Pointer” on learner’s eye movement in the triggered-based animated instructional design, and to evaluate whether the instructional design is appropriate or not. This research used the eye-tracker “EyeGaze” as the tool to collect and analyze the eye movement data of six seventh-grade students during learning the teaching material designed by Adaptive Pointer. We also adopted questionnaire, learning performance test, and students’ demographic data to do qualitative analyses.
The major findings of this study are as follows:
1.Adaptive Pointer can attract learners and to help them focus and locate important messages.
2.Learners considered that their perception load is less when they learned the teaching materials, and they have more positive evaluation regarding the guidance of the teaching materials.
3.The results of the learning performance test and the eye movement guided by Adaptive Pointer are not related.
4.Designers should consider factors such as the highlight degree of messages, the number of the highlight messages in simultaneous time, the repetition of messages, the tendencies of vision line, and the cues while using Adaptive Pointer.
