本論文試圖以馬來西亞出身的華裔美國作家林玉玲(Shirley Geok-lin Lim)的兩部作品，《月白的臉》及《金與香》為出發點探討和詮釋林玉玲離散書寫中的身份認同政治議題，特別是文化身分認同(Cultural identity)及文化同化(Cultural assimilation)。 本論文和其他討論林玉玲作品的論述不同之處在於本論文將重點放在分析馬來西亞以往複雜的殖民歷史和統治迭易所造成的馬來種族霸權統治，以及此一政治現實對馬來西亞境內非馬來族裔的其他移民族群，特別是華人等在公民權、教育權和政經發展方面所遭受的打壓和負面影響；其中尤以語言與文化政策中的馬來獨大走向影響深遠。對於曾受英國殖民教育培養的馬華一代而言，當英國殖民者離去，馬來聯邦成立後，馬來西亞得以獨立，卻讓馬來西亞人反而對國族、語言和文化認同有了更多複雜的疑問和爭議：馬來西亞特徵是什麼？誰才是馬來西亞人？當祖國在政治、文化及語言上排斥特定族裔時，所謂安身立命的家園還能等同於此祖國嗎？能否在種族霸權統治和多元文化之間尋求對話的空間？林玉玲在其1996年出版的自傳<月白的臉>及2000年完成的小說<金與香>中皆觸及這些議題，尤其是馬來西亞於1969年5月因大選而引起的一連串族裔失和暴動及該事件引發的華人外移出走風潮和影響。本論文試以林玉玲的這兩部作品來分析離散書寫中文化身分認同及文化同化的議題，並把此議題放回馬來西亞特定的歷史時空背景上討論。

This thesis analyzes identity politics in two prose writings by Shirley Geok-lin Lim: Among the White Moon Faces: An Asian–American’s Memoir of Homelands (1996) and Joss and Gold (2000). Being a British-educated Chinese Malaysian/Asian American poet and writer, Lim’s own formation of diasporic identity already furnishes an excellent example of cultural displacements since she focuses on her Chinese Malaysian identity and the sufferings of her ethnic community in the aforementioned two works and other academic writings. Thus, unlike other scholarly works discussing issues of home-making and Asian American identity in Lim’s works, this thesis first explicates the theme of home and exile from a diasporic theoretical framework and its relevance to the understanding of identity politics. Secondly, with an emphasis on the Malaysian May 13 Riots in 1969, it also explores issues about cultural displacement and cultural assimilation. It also examines the complicated history of Malaysian, its result of ethnic diversity, and Malay-dominant ideology as well as its effects on the language and cultural policies of Malaysia.
