In my thesis, I argue that careful examinations of King’s The Shining reveal a significant link between Poe’s gothic short stories, such as “Masque of the Red Death” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and King’s The Shining. Indeed, scholars have claimed that for example, Poe and King both share Shakespearean influence in their writing of Gothic stories. And further examination might also provide insight into how the Overlook Hotel in The Shining can be a composite consisting of various Poesque references, and that the protagonist is a reflection of autobiographical references to specific aspects of the lives of Poe and King themselves. My research then focuses on another aspect of these discussions, namely, how Poe’s extensive use of castles and haunted houses has become major inspiration for King to highlight feelings and anxieties of claustrophobia. This can be especially seen in The Shining in the repeated re-enactment of the protagonist’s psychological disorders in the hotel’s oppressive environment. For me, Poe's short tales thus serve as a looming reference within King’s fictions. Finally, using Freud’s idea of the uncanny and compulsive repetitions, I want to look into how Poe’s gothic buildings transform into King’s hotel. I will carefully illustrate King’s parodic use of Poe’s gothic imagination and contribute eventually to the study of the genre of the Gothic and the horrors.
