馬來西亞檳城喬治市東北沿海的海墘地帶（Weld Quay）於19世紀末期形成，自形成後此處即作為檳城繁盛海洋運輸貿易的重要腹地，而後，以姓氏為單位的數個結群陸續遷移至此處，至20世紀中期陸續形成現今的樣貌，至今留有姓林橋、姓周橋、姓陳橋、姓李橋、雜姓橋與姓楊橋，連同五條路區域的填海區域，這些領取臨時地契的大片木屋區被外界通稱為「姓氏橋」（Clan Jetties）。
以「界域」（borderlands）作為理解各橋所處於多重邊界的狀態，包括空間位置、生計方式與結群特色等，筆者試圖指出在不同歷史性中，其皆處於由相異分類方式所支配或者賴以維生的邊緣性（marginality）狀態，包括1980年代末期檳城經濟的轉型、2000年代檳城成為世界文化遺產的前後時期。在一次次與全球力量交會的過程中，使得對於橋民而言，無論在生活與生計方式下，與海洋緊密相連並富含許多人際網絡的「海墘」意義逐漸消失，取而代之的是，供國內外遊客與本地中產階級所觀看的「姓氏橋」。
在此篇論文中，筆者即欲探討在這些相異歷史過程中，多重邊緣性狀態的形成機制，如何與其所處的界域狀態互動，無論是延續、或者是產生變異的過程。最後，筆者試圖指出，海墘人群所面臨的多元認同與連帶關係下的掙扎與游移處境，其也可能是檳城在歷經英國殖民時期、馬來西亞獨立而後的經濟發展過程中，特定分類人群所歷經的普同處境，以此，我們試圖較為動態地思考檳城華人社會的異質展現。
