被動綜合（passive synthesis）是舒茲現象社會學思想裡意識流的基本參照模式，吾人生活世界中的慣性知識與被動綜合形成互為循環的過程，被動綜合使人的意識經長處於被動的狀態之中。
單設定（monothetic）跟多設定（polythetic）的綜合（synthsis）則是舒茲意識流過程中的一種注意的輻度範圍。單設定綜合像是單一、單方面的注意、理解或推論；而多設定綜合則像是多元的、多方面的注意跟理解。舒茲認為：在意識流的進行中必定會經歷單╱多設定綜合的轉換，而個體在單設定的狀態裡，個體是處於被動綜合的狀態的，而當單設定轉換到多設定綜合狀態時，個體才會從被動綜合的狀態裡產生主動意識與覺察，而在單╱多設定綜合的交替、被動與主動意識的轉換之間會產生注意的修整現象，修整的幅度影響著個體計畫是否屬於幻想或是成為行動。

舒茲同意胡塞爾所用內在界域跟外在界域的分法，並認為個體的意識流除了外在社會環境（等同於外在界域）的影響之外，也受到其內在動機及所參照的庫存知識（等同於內在界域）的影響。而不管是對內在的庫存知識或是外在的經驗認識，個體都會經過單╱多設定綜合的過程，而生活世界則是經由意識界域構成，個體在界域中持存的被動綜合及慣性知識成為社會生活中必然的現象。

舒茲同時也受到詹姆士意識流場域理論的影響，認為每一個意識界域必包含主題（focus）跟邊緣（fringe）。加上受到萊布尼茲「細微知覺」（small perception）的影響，發展出其融合意識界域的意識流觀：舒茲的界域觀除了形成主題的焦點及邊緣內的界域，也包含了邊緣外的真空地帶（vacanvy）。

本文旨在探討意識流進行時，單╱多設定綜合的狀態在意識界域中進行及演變的過程。藉著對意識界域的剖析及單╱多設定綜合狀態的掌握，有助於使我們理解舒茲現象學社會學思想中意識界域的樣貌，同時反思生活世界的被動綜合現象的形成，使我們對現象學中「存而不論」、「視為理所當然」的知識庫存及慣性知識的來源有新的認識。透過意識張力的分析，揭示個體在單╱多設定的意識過程中所產生的中斷交替或修整的現象，其中產生意識張力的變化，能促使個體進入反思的覺察狀態。透過反思，個體得以獲得行動的意義，也能夠從被動綜合的慣性作用中解凍出來，重新思考「理所當然」下的深層意義。
