葫蘆藝術是工藝美術的其中一項，而工藝美術是指應實際生活上的需要，以工藝技術為手段，美術為目的，在各種器物上施以美術之技巧或裝飾。本研究想藉由最原始的傳統生活素材，利用雕刻的方式，運用幾何圖形的紋飾及原始創作的思維來呈現出葫蘆藝術的純樸之美，透過雕刻具有意義的符號方式並運用來使葫蘆本身已經存在的美的輪廓線更加富有生命。
工藝作品包含了藝術、美感形式，但絕不能脫離生活實用的條件，因此本研究所要呈現的不只是葫蘆藝術的造形、紋飾之美，更要能具「生活化」。也就是希望能透過藝術設計的方式，讓創作的作品不只是具有裝飾性的功能，進一步能融入每個人的生活裡。
本文共分五章，第一章為緒論，說明本文之研究背景與動機、研究方法與範圍限制並將相關名詞加以定義。第二章為創作學理與內容，將透過工藝設計、裝飾符號之意涵，探討葫蘆藝術可能的表現形式。第三章為創作理念，透過原始藝術之創造、幾何符號之轉換來形成創作內容、題材和創作的形式並記錄使用技法。第四章為作品分析與詮釋，分為光系列、歲月系列、器系列、遊藝系列來詮釋筆者的葫蘆創作。第五章為結論，將本創作論述作一討論總結，闡述表達筆者對於原始情感及幾何符號的觀點，藉由雕刻技法及生活機能的結合，期待葫蘆工藝能更進一步的推廣。

Abstract

Calabash Arts as one of the items of Craft Arts which refers to applying art techniques or decorations to all kinds of objects with the means of craft techniques and the purpose of arts in order to meet people’s needs in real life. The aim of this study is to use original materials in traditional life by means of carving, primitive geometric patterns, and originally creative ideas to present the pure beauty of Calabash Arts. Even though the calabash itself already exists beauty of curving lines, through carving the significant symbols on it can enrich the calabash more power of life.

Craft works includes arts and aesthetic forms. It cannot leave out the essential requirement of being “useful” in real life. Thus the study is not only going to present the beauty of calabash’s shape and patterns, but also to prove the arts can meanwhile be functional in daily life. Hopefully through art designing, the art works can both be decorative and life applicable.

The study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is Introduction: to explain the research background and motivations of the present study, also define the relevant terms and clarify the research limits. The second chapter is Theories Discussion on Art Works: Through considering the essence of craft design and decorative symbols to discuss possible performances of Calabash Arts. The third chapter is the Creative Ideas of Art Works: To record the techniques and process of applying Primitive Arts and geometric symbols transforming to art works. The forth chapter is Personal Art Work Interpretation: it includes four series – Light, Years, Receptacle, and Play. All these are the interpretation of my calabash works. The fifth chapter is Conclusion: to sum up the discussions of the study that reveals my points of view towards primitive creation and geometric symbols. Through combing carving techniques with life functions, we can expect in the near future, the Calabash Arts will be expanded and popularize.
