Having developed for decades, social enterprises are gaining more attention from different sectors. As the development getting mature, social enterprises show a success of balancing dual mission and create a new business model of solving the social issues as their innovative competences. For achieving the ultimate aim of systemic change to solve the social problems fundamentally, scale up is regards as a process and a way to further diffuse the social mission.
While most of the scale up researches of social enterprises focus on the social impact by non-organization growth, this research primarily concentrates on organization growth by using the growth theory of ordinary business ventures to classify the scale up approaches. The financial resources as the crucial factor to grow are also included into the research scope to draw a better picture of how social enterprises conquer the barrier of lacking of resources, and scale the organization up.
The current research adopts a multiple-case study with semi-structured interview by selecting four social enterprises from diverse fields and different growth phases to generalize the tendency of scale up approaches, which are GoodWill Foods, Yuen-Pei Farm. OurCityLove and PureMilk. Additionally, Taiwan social context is discussed to provide a relatively comprehensive overview of social enterprises scale up approaches in Taiwan.
