With the development of mobile phone technology, mobile phone is no longer only used to communicate, people can read e-books to learn more on it. Majority of mobile phones are visual-oriented designed, that make the visually impaired unable to use all the functions smoothly. DAISY is an accessible information system, which provides disabled people a convenient way to get information. It would be contributive to promote DAISY if it could be used on mobile phone. In order to design a DAISY mobile phone interface could be used easily for visually impaired user, improvement on current mobile phone interface was developed in this study, that could decrease the difficulty for use.
A combined operation interface of DAISY and mobile phone function is developed basing on universal design rule in this study. The improved interface reset the menu according to visually impaired user’s needs, and adds a much more flexible selecting option. The user interface design is evaluated by analysis of GOMS and experiment. The experiment provided the original and improved interfaces let 12 subjects who were recruited do the experimental task. The operating time, steps error and mental workload of subjects’ operated on the two interfaces were compared..
The results of this study indicated the operation on the improved interface could reduce 38% operating time, 3 operating steps, and the error rate was significantly decreased. The results proved that the improvement was effective. It is expected that the improvement of this interface could be used on the future DAISY mobile phone which could let visually impaired users read accessibly on mobile phone.
