影像壓縮技術被廣泛使用在資料傳輸及儲存上,它可以有效的節省儲存空間並達到加快傳輸速度的效果。JPEG 2000是最新的影像壓縮標準,其和以往的JPEG最大的差異在於使用離散小波轉換和使用最佳化截斷區塊編碼,並擁有許多JPEG所沒有的優點,如高壓縮比時r較佳的圖像品質,漸進式的傳輸,重點區塊處理等等。本論文的主要目的,為實作JPEG 2000 Part 1,並和現有的JPEG 2000壓縮程式(如Kakadu)以及DCT-based JPEG進行比較。
Data compression plays an important role in the data archiving and communication since it can reduce storage space and increase transmission speed. JPEG 2000 is the most recent image compression standard coding system based on wavelet technology. It is consisted of image pre-processing, discrete wavelet transform, quantization, and Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation.
JPEG 2000 has several advantages such as high picture quality at low bit rates, better properties of resolution, quality, color components and position progression scalability, supporting both lossless and lossy compression in a single compression architecture, region of interest (ROI), multiple resolution representation in a image, random code-stream access and processing, and good error resilience. JPEG 2000 supports not only static mage compression, but also video data compression, which is defined in JPEG 2000 Part 3.
In this thesis, we implement the Part 1 of JPEG 2000. Then we compress four color images two gray-level images and measure the quality of compressed images by PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) values. According to our experimental results, only under high compression ratio such as 100, the performance of JPEG 2000 will be significant better than DCT-based JPEG. The performance is also affected by the images for compression. The larger the smooth region, the better the performance of will be.
